Who are all these people?!
Living in a college dorm can be extremely advantageous for students. Being in contact with so many people of varying backgrounds, age and study levels can be helpful to students who are transitioning to college life. There are endless opportunities for working with people on your dorm floor and asking for their assistance.
If you are new to a college campus and dorm life, you may have roommates or share your floor with people who may have spent time on the campus. They may be able to help you find your way around, locate the cafeterias, offer suggestions on campus jobs and choosing classes based on the profile of the professor. Ask for their assistance, they can act as your "tour guide," so to speak. Floormates can also be a great source of reinforcement for your studies. Try to organize study groups with people on your floor. You can ask for help with reading assignments, breaking them up and giving each other the key points or vocabulary, cutting down some of the in-depth reading you each have to do. Your floormates may have the same class or professor and could provide that extra help you might need to get through a class or write a paper. For instance, if a floormate of yours has taken the same class and professor as the one you are in now, she might have some old files that you can use to know what you are in for. She may have study guides or be able to give you hints on how to write papers that will impress a certain teacher. You might be able to do the same for someone else, or maybe even provide tutoring to a struggling student that will also reinforce your knowledge! Floormates or roommates are also an excellent source of socialization, providing that home away from home feeling. This is especially important to those who have left their families and are away from home for the first time. Create a system to meet and work out together, go to tdinner together and ensure that you are not isolated. This can make being away from home more difficult and can hamper your success. Having someone to talk to and bond with is an important part of the adjustment to college life. Floormates and roomates can be a great part of your success. They can help ease your transistion while building a college family or network of friends. The added benefit of having help with schedules classes and work makes living in a college dorm fun and interesting. Make sure that you notonly meet the people that share the floor with you, but alos work for each other to ensure each other's success!
