How to Adjust To Live On Your Own
It's finally happened.
You're at college. You beginning to realize why everyone was telling you "It's nothing like high school". It's not. You feel nervous, anxious and a little out of place. Not to worry. There are ways to ease your adjustment into college life, living on your own and your transition to adulthood. The most important part of adjusting to college life on your own is to get involved. Go to class and join study groups as well as clubs and other activities. Involvement with other students can help you see ways of adjusting and maintain a healthy positive attitude. If everyone else is doing it so can you. Being in class everyday gives you a sense of routine and breeds a feeling of accomplishment and goal achievement. Part of being and adult and independent is being able to identify your own strengths and weaknesses and knowing which will benefit you. Encourage the habits that will make you feel the most comfortable and least stressed. Adopting effective stress management techniques now will be a skill that will help you through out your entire life. Nothing gets done when your feeling pressured and stressed. Keep your eyes on your goal and keep in mind the reason that your in college in the first place. Take care of yourself. Eat right, sleep well, exercise and play sports. All those things are important to anyone but as a new student with all the added stresses and new responsibilities it's even more important to get the best start you can. If your body is run down, your mind isn't far behind. Schedule regular sports events and activities. Eat more than just convenience foods and junk. Give your body what it needs to perform at its utmost level. College is all about fun and parties as well as education. Part of the learning process is figuring out your own limitations and how to stick to them. Do everything in moderation and don't let a good time get in the way of the rest of your life. All to often the partying aspect of college becomes a students life and overshadows the academics. Make sure you can keep the two separate. Stay on campus as much as possible. Learning to function on your own is dependent upon getting accustomed to your new environment. You must be comfortable with your surroundings before you can grow outside them. Surround yourself with healthy people that support you and your educational goals. Manage your time well, making sure to plan out all that you need to accomplish each day. This will help you to remember your responsibilities and stay on task. No one is there to hand your hand anymore. Your responsibilities are your own. It is certainly a scary time in life but an exciting growing experience as well. These years are the ones that you remember most fondly and tell your grandchildren about. They help to form you into the adult that is just around the corner.
