College students and young adults today are more tuned in to technology than any of the generations that have come before them. And the fact of the matter is that cell phones aren't just phones anymore. The latest cells phone come fully equipped with gadgets that reach far beyond being able to talk on the phone while walking to their next class on-campus. The latest cell phones allow college students to send email, text messages, listen to their favorite songs, take pictures, create videos, and surf the Internet all from their cell phone. So, basically the 'in' thing for college students right now are all-in-one cell phone devices that allow them to do just about everything they need to from the one piece of technology that they can hold in their hand.

In March of 2006, Samsung launched the SGH-i310, which has more than double the storage space of the previous version, which was released in 2005 (just 1 year ago). This particular phone has an MP3 player, a small camera, an external memory, can store approximately 2,000 songs, and uses a program called Windows Mobile 5.0 for Smartphone.

This phone not only takes technology a step further, it takes a leap further. The SGH-i310 enables users to sync their songs and videos from their personal computer to their cell phone and vice versa. The phone also contains a USB port so that it can be used as a removable hard disk. This allows students to easily store files and/or transfer files to and from their personal computers to their cell phone.

Without high tech cell phones like the Samsung SGH-i310 and other phones like it, college students are just not 'hip', according to a college campus survey conducted at the University of Southern Florida (USF). Colleges and universities are even buying into the fact that the best way to reach their students, faculty, and staff are through technology like their cell phones. College campuses have found that communicating with their students through text messages and via email is more effective than any form of communication that they utilized so far.

The proof is also in the statistics. In August of 2005, M:Metrics performed an independent study of college students. The conclusions of this study found that college students are 42 percent more likely to use their cell phone email than cell phone users in other age groups.

While cell phones were at the top of the list of inventions that people hated the most, they also said at the same time that they couldn't live without them. With generation after generation becoming more on the go than the generation before them, all-in-one cell phones are a necessity not just an accessory.
