How to Handle the Complete Lifestyle Change of College
It's almost time. Fall means school begins and your off to start out life as a college freshman. At last! Freedom! Independence! Adulthood!
But wait, what's this? Balancing checkbooks, monthly budgeting and other scary responsibilities. And they're all yours. Adulthood isn't always so much fun. So how do you adjust to the complete lifestyle change that comes with college? Keep the lines of communication open. Just because you don't see y our parents everyday doesn't mean they aren't still there for you. Let them know when something becomes a problem or an issue arises that your not sure how to handle. You have to learn somewhere and your parents are a good place to start. Talk to your peers and find out how they are dealing with the new pressures and responsibilities. Use the schools advisors and counselors. That's what they are there for and they are trained to give you the best advise possible. Its extremely important to keep a good attitude. Surround yourself with people who keep you motivated and upbeat. Don't let stressful situations get you down. Try to find the lighter side of predicaments. Focusing on the negatives to often leads to decreased motivation and you are less productive. Studies show that people who are described as Cheerful or perky are often successful and happy. Practice effective stress management techniques. Developing good ways to handle stress now will benefit you the rest of your life. Don't lose sight of your goals. It's easy to get caught up in the fun and partying of the college social scene. Just don't forget the reason your there to begin with. All to often students get so involved in their social activities that they begin to let their academic work slide. This is a dangerous habit to acquire as it could lead to failure of a semester or even a total year of school. Keep your eyes on the prize and remind yourself daily of what your working toward. What is often a big surprise to students is the total responsibility for their own education. Used to being pushed and prodded by high school teachers, students sometimes mistake the freedom of college classes as a free pass to goof off. The realize to late that the whole responsibility of their education is up to them. College professors don't care if you come to class or do your homework. Their job is to teach and yours is to learn. Get involved with school activities. Surround yourself with peers and adults who value the same things that you do makes it that much easier to attain your goals. Joining study groups is a good way to keep your study skills sharp but break up the monotony of class time. Taking a life skills class helps to develop the attributes you need to succeed in your journey into adulthood. College life is a big change from the world of high school but being prepared before you go is a big step in adjusting to your new life. Take each day one step at a time and keep your eyes on the prize. Before you know it you'll be walking the line in your cap and gown.
