College isn't all about hard work and academics. It's also about growing as a person and learning your strengths and weaknesses. Participation in clubs, organizations and activities aids in rounding out your college experience by sharpening your communication skills, organizational abilities and leadership qualities. There are so many different groups to choose from, where do you start?

Begin by analyzing your personality, interests and talents. Research groups that will add to your current abilities. Choose an organization that you are interested in, even if you don't have any past experiences with it. College is about learning new things as well as enhancing your current interests. You can also join organizations that are centered around your academic choices. Great in math? Join the math club.

Sports is another venue. Join a sports team. If your an avid volleyball player, join the team. If you're a cheerful, athletic person, try out for cheerleading. Check out the dance teams and the rifle or baton clubs.

Students who are naturally organized and have a knack for getting things in order easily should get involved in planning committees. You'll be part of the organization of homecoming, fall festivals and Christmas events. Most colleges have a student activities board that provides a variety of programs geared toward the entire student body.

Democrats and Republicans alike can join groups to socialize with others while learning more about the political process. Environmentalist can join clubs to socialize and grow with other students with similar interests.

Use the various types of activities to ready yourself for your future career. If you plan to be a journalist, try your hand at a school publication. If your headed to law school check out the debate club.

All too often the social life in college leads to drinking and partying. While it is almost undeniable it has to be only part of the fun. Joining clubs and organizations can help to fill your free time with activities that are less likely to get you in trouble.

Joining clubs and organizations strengthens a students personality and life skills, forming the adult that will eventually emerge. The journey to independence is based on a persons ability to forge ahead and learn new things. Becoming more involved in campus life gives you a feeling of comfort in your surroundings and you feel more at ease at school. The things you do and get involved with now will serve you later in life also. Not only will you gain knowledge and experience but they look great on a resume! Students involved in organizations gain valuable leadership experiences and bond new friendships.
