Avoiding the "Little Fish in a Big Pond" Problem
Going to college causes a big transition and is quite a turning point in your life. Whether you realize it or not, you are not just changing schools. You are, in all likelihood, uprooting your entire life and leaving behind family and lots of friends. Creating a new set of friends in college may sound easy and in some ways it is, you just have to be brave and well...friendly!
Okay, high school was a little tricky. The whole acceptance by other people thing was difficult because it was high school and that's how people are in high school. Shake that off, because college is a whole new environment. People are much more relaxed and less inclined to worry about what people think. If someone asks about your interests or your major, don't be shy! Be yourself and be honest. Chances are you will have something in common with them and might get invited to hang out with them and some of their friends. Don't always wait for someone to come to you. Bumping into people in line at the Registrar's or Bursar's office or seeing someone from your dorm floor in the cafeteria are all possible ways to meet people that could become good friends, as long as you hang out with them and take time to get to know them. Let them also get to know you. Do favors for each other, start a work out regimen together and meet for meals in the lunch room. Another good source of people that you could hang out with is your classes. You might only be taking prerequisite classes, or basics, so most people will not share your major. That doesn't matter. A nursing and an education major that did not share a class after the first year met for lunch twice a week and are best friends ten years later! It's all about surrounding yourself with people who have things in common with you. You won't know until you get to know them a little. Give people a chance, find things out about each other and eventually you will find someone or some people who share your interests and that you can hang out with outside of school.
